
Actually, long-range precision is not that much of a day at the bench as it is whether a cartridge will continue to work when the wind quartering off a ridge starts shifting by the minute. Both hunters and match shooters are after the same thing; a repeatable flight path that does not require continuous re-zeroing, constant load-adjustment, or a special rifle to get it to work.
The following cartridges were given their names due to the fact that they are more likely to provide that type of practical consistency with the most common rifle configurations. The newcomers have been enjoying the advantage of the more modern bullet design and tighter production, yet the old-faithfuls still have a purpose.

1. .308 Winchester
The.308 is the minimum standard of a cartridge that merely drops in over a broad range of rifles and barrel lengths. It is generous enough such that shooters are allowed to concentrate on the basics of position, trigger, and wind calls instead of a slim load window. That is more in the actual world than a few inches of drop on a chart. At quality match-style loads (usually 168- to 175-grain bullets), the .308 will sometimes be able to deliver predictable dope at mid-to-long range, and the recoil is easily enough controlled to make a shooter true-to-form with increased practice.

2. 6.5 Creedmoor
The success of the Creedmoor was achieved through attention to detail that pays off: rapid twist rates, efficient case geometry and high-BC bullets that hold time of flight in check. It is also among the most vivid illustrations of the way the quality of ammunition can modify distances results. It requires discipline at extreme ranges, where wind reading and bullets choices are no longer compromiseable, and it is one of the most pragmatic cartridges of longer range, when it comes to developing the fundamentals of long-range shooting and not getting beaten up in the process.

4. .243 Winchester
The .243 has always had a low-keyed reputation of being easily accurate. Recoil and light assist in keeping the form and most rifles loaded in .243 appear to shoot tighter than anticipated without having to use special handloads. With lower recoil compared to most big-game ammunitions, and a flatter trajectory than most .308, shooters seeking an easier path to long-range shooting than the least experienced long-range shooter will still get an easy flight path with .243, although only on well-crafted bolt guns.

5. 6mm ARC
The AR-15 distance work size was extended to 6mm ARC, which used to demand a larger rifle. It fires high-BC 6mm bullets to make it remain stable at long range and allow the shooter to run fast with only a mild recoil. A normal factory performance of the cartridge will see it push with 103-grains of bullets a speed of 2,800 to 2,900 fps around a 18-inch barrel and is commonly linked with supersonic flight at distances up to 1,300 or more based on the conditions. 6. .270 Winchester
Mostly you hear about the .270 being a classic round in hunting, however, its permanence is in its consistency in shooting in the ordinary rifles. It is not picky and factory rifles that are chambered in it consistently make unexpectedly good groups with little effort. To shoot farther in the field, 300 meters or more, the flat trajectory and predictability characteristics of the .270 relieve the cognitive burden: fewer surprises, less corrective action required, more time can be spent on wind and position.

7. 6.5 PRC
The 6.5 PRC is a continuation of the Creedmoor concept in a faster, more energetic category that does not necessarily put a shooter in the heavy-magnum recoil. 8. .22 LR (match-grade)
Match rimfire is not in any way a substitute of centerfire long range, but can replicate the discipline: clean positions, flawless trigger work and small wind calls that cause impacts to move visibly. The finest lots are the ones that reward the attentional, and penalize the short-cut. Rimfire consistency is determined by ignition and velocity distribution; high-end lines focus on tight fabrication and consistent parts, including loads that are frequently linked with little differences in velocity. The match .22 LR in practice is among the most effective methods of developing consistent practice with precision without the recoil and barrel wear of high-volume centerfire training.

9. 7mm Remington Magnum
The shape of the 7mm Rem. Mag. has long been that of long range, with its high sectional density, and space enough to hold sleek bullets, but until modern projectiles made it possible, it had to be compromised with the early factory combinations that had bred a long range disappointment in the 7mm. It has a combination of flat trajectory, and heavy energy retention with 168- to 180-grains, high-BC bullets that allow long-range hunters and steel shooters a cartridge with a comfortable level of wind and distance that is still familiar in mainstream rifle platforms.
The unifying factor in these cartridges is not hype or brash speed. It is repeatability: solid bullets, steady ammunition, and the recoil rates that keep the shooters active and helps them rectify in situations when the environment fails them. In the long distance, the cartridge is just another component of the system, but when one selects a cartridge which will act predictably, the rest of the system data, wind calls and execution becomes much easier to control.
